Fletcher: We're behind the boss

Moyes and Fletcher
13/01/2014 10:52, Report by Mark Froggatt

Darren Fletcher claims his United team-mates have been angered by recent criticism from the media and insists the Reds are ready to turn this season around.

United notched a first win of 2014 with a 2-0 victory over Swansea on Saturday after suffering three consecutive defeats in all competitions, a disappointing run of form after which one newspaper claimed the players were not fully behind David Moyes.

Former boss Sir Alex Ferguson's attendance at matches has also, strangely, been scrutinised in the press. However, when asked how the squad feels about such speculation, Fletcher was unflinching in his response.

"It gets us angry because we know it is not true, that is the biggest thing," the Scot explained. "We are there every day and we realise that the players are fully behind the manager. Alex Ferguson being in the stand has no bearing on anything, it is great to see him there supporting the team and I think it would be a worry if he wasn't.

"I think we have just got to be believe in ourselves and keep a close-knit group, keep making sure that the experienced players are guiding the younger players in the right way and that we are coming together as a team. I think winning games helps that, it is the only way you get through that and we have got to keep doing that."

Fletcher made his seventh appearance of the season on Saturday and completed another 90 minutes with

relative ease, continuing his personal rehabilitation following a prolonged battle with the bowel condition ulcerative colitis.

Crucially, as one of United's most experienced squad members, the likeable Scot is also guiding the club's younger players through a testing period, a responsibility he is relishing.

"I think it comes naturally with experience, you have been there and done it. I have been in situations when we have been written off and booed and all of the things that go with it. You come through that and you are stronger for it. You have got to do that.

"I had experienced players around me at those times who really backed me and gave me great advice. I am just playing on experience. I am getting match fitness back, I am getting stronger with every game. But experience is the biggest thing, having a bit of knowledge about the game and having been there and done it for such a long time really helps."

Analysis: Januzaj outstanding

As the Reds got back to winning ways on Saturday via a 2-0 Barclays Premier League home win over Swansea, it was United's boy wonder Adnan Januzaj who again took the plaudits after another impressive display.

Although not on the scoresheet himself, the Belgian-born attacker's eye-catching performance was enough for United fans on Twitter to name him Man of the Match, taking 71% of the vote ahead of Shinji Kagawa and Antonio Valencia, the three players nominated by MUTV matchday pundit David May.

Januzaj had a hand in both goals and many other good attacking moves that the Reds created, so former United left-back Arthur Albiston enjoyed dissecting the 18-year-old's performance in MUTV's The Big Match De-Brief programme.

"He looks as if he's been in the first team for over five years, he's just so confident," the Scot said. "He plays with no fear and has got great vision. We watched him play in the youth teams as a striker but he's more than effective out wide too.

"Eventually I see him doing a similar job in the middle to Mesut Ozil at Arsenal, although I think he'll have more goals in him because he used to play up front. He doesn't get fazed when he gets into the box."

How to Become a Natural Beauty

We try to look beautiful, but sometimes end up looking a tad artificial. This article not only highlights the ideals of a natural beauty but also reflects on enhancing yourself, body, and mind.

Steps

1

  1. 1
Believe that you are beautiful. There is nothing more beautiful - The most efficient way is eating a BALANCED diet and also get plenty of exercise. Start by walking with friends, taking up dancing or start to jog around the block every day.

  2. 2
Clear up your skin and even the tone. Embrace your face. Learn to accept and love your skin even if it is not clear or even toned. You can use natural products such as shea butter for more even skin tone, rosemary oil for acne, tea tree oil for inflamed acne, and witch hazel for a calming affect on redness. Just add a few drops to your nighttime moisturizer. Supplement by adding more veggies and fruit to your diet and getting plenty of vitamins D and C. Remember to exfoliate your skin no more than 3 times a week. Do not over exfoliate though because it will make your face go flaky and red. Rinse your face in the morning with cool water and use a cleanser that doesn't contain alcohol. Place the cleanser in a small spray bottle for a light misting that you can use throughout the day and follow with a moisturizing face cream with a sunblock.
  3. 3
Get pretty, healthy hair. If you want to dye your hair (which always makes your hair stand out and is a great way to change up your look) opt for ammonia free kits or ask your colorist or stylist at your salon to use ammonia free or "gentle" concoctions. Ask for a semi or demi-permanent dye and always embrace your hair colour and texture. No hair type is unattractive. Not only will this mitigate the time you spend with the flatiron or curling iron, it will also increase the strength of your tresses. If you must use heat-tools use a heat protective spray before you style or blow dry to keep your hair shiny and healthy. Wash your hair regularly so its nice and clean otherwise it will go greasy and it will start to smell.
  4. 4
Brush those pearly whites. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, follow with a restorative mouth wash. Floss at night before you go to bed, and chew sugar free gum after meals to promote saliva flow which ultimately lessens the probability of cavities because it prevents plaque acid. Be sure to see your dentist twice a year for checkups and a cleaning. To keep teeth white drink strong acidic drinks such as coffee and soda through straws to prevent corrosion of the enamel.
  5. 5
Don't make the makeup obvious. A good tinted moisturizer, brown mascara, nude or pink lip gloss is all the natural beauty needs.
  6. 6
Get some exercise. Be body conscious, but never obsess. You don't need the fancy diet programs advertised on T.V. nor do you need to belong to those health clubs that are popping up everywhere. Just do you. Exercise what you enjoy. That's why it's called exercise, which originally meant "the act of employing or putting into play". So if you like to walk your dog, run, hike, bike, dance, or even watch Richard Simmons. Do what makes you move and what you enjoy. Exercise also makes you feel more confident and happy because it releases hormones called endorphins.
  7. 7
Get enough sleep. Sleep! Sleep! Sleep! It is wonderful and we don't do it nearly enough. Aim for the bare minimum 6 and a half hours of sleep and shoot for 9/10 hours. Set a regular bedtime such as 9 O'clock and don't eat two hours before bed, stay away from caffeine which has a half life of approximately 4.9 hours. That means that if you drink a cup of coffee, half of the caffeine in that cup of coffee is out of your body in 4.9 hours. If you have a cup of coffee an hour before bed... well you are in for a restless night. If you have a hard time falling asleep, systematic relaxation techniques are wonderful. Start at your feet and tense the muscles in your feet for a count of 5 seconds and relax. Proceed up the body tensing and releasing the leg, buttocks, stomach, arms, hands, neck and face muscles through counts of 5 seconds. If you have racing thoughts imagine that your thoughts are fish and you are catching them in a slow moving stream. Acknowledge that they are there and then send them on their way, Relaxing meditation music on YouTube is very useful to. Finally, melatonin is a natural supplement that aids in relaxation and sleep. This should be reserved for individuals who have a very difficult time with sleep and are considering going on medication. Try melatonin first. It is naturally occurring, and non-habit forming.
  8. 8
    Finished.

Looking for Lithotripsy: Accessibility and Portability of Canadian Healthcare

Background: Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is a definitive, ambulatory and non-invasive modality for treating kidney stones. ESWL is not available in all urban centres and many Canadians must either travel, sometimes out of province, or wait to have this procedure performed. We sought to evaluate the variability in access to ESWL treatment.

Method: We compiled a comprehensive list of ESWL centres in Canada and contacted all centres in 2011 to assess their wait times, out-of-province patient fees, and roles and responsibilities of the referring physician.

Results: We contacted all 23 ESWL facilities across Canada (100% response rate). Wait times for elective ESWL procedures ranged from one day to over one year, with a mean of 8.4 weeks (SD, 16.76 weeks). No centres refused out-of-province patients, although five discouraged travel to their centre owing to their prolonged wait times. No facilities charged extra fees for out-of-province patients. Ten (43%) facilities required a secondary consultation by a urologist at the centre before booking. Twelve (52%) of the centres indicated the waiting time could be shortened if the referring physician were to advocate on the patient's behalf. Contact was repeated one year later in 2012 with five centres, and the results were similar.

Interpretation: There is marked variation in wait times across Canada for ESWL but there are few barriers to care. Patients' waits may be shortened by physician advocacy.

Urban Putt: Miniature Golf 2.0

What if you turned a bunch of makers loose to create a new kind of miniature golf course, one built with all the modern technology available, but that still retained the whimsical fun and inventiveness that makes miniature golf so enduringly popular? You’d get Urban Putt.
Urban Putt is an indoor miniature golf course in the works in San Francisco. The Jules Verne/steampunk-inspired course is being built with scores of traditional and electrical contraptions as well as several mechanical ones, too. Some of the features include the 1906 earthquake hole featuring buildings that shake and rumble, an “undersea” hole where the ball triggers a series of motion-sensitive LEDs, an Archimedes’ screw that lifts the golf ball 12 feet of the ground before depositing it on a ramp where it bounces off a series of drums, bells, and cymbals, and a “marble-maze” platform mounted over servos controlled by a putter that acts as a joystick.

Urban Putt has assembled a team of industrial designers, architects, sound designers, and Burning Man veterans to build the course. They leaned heavily on a mighty ShopBot Buddy and 3D modeling software to create the one-of-a-kind course. SpinBot founders Anne Mayoral and Chris Myers lead the design team for the project.
“There is a very strong alignment between the makers and miniature golf on this project,” said founder and head greenskeeper Steve Fox.
The idea for Urban Putt was born in Fox’s house several years ago. He and his wife used to host miniature golf games at a course he built. The parties grew to be very popular and he knew he was on to something. Could he develop the game into something bigger?
“I developed a real love for a new kind of miniature golf,” he said, a game that was more interactive, immersive, and surprising than the traditional 1970s kitsch that surrounds miniature golf. ”The idea kept nagging at me.”
After writing and scrapping several business plans he came up with Urban Putt. To make it a profitable business in crazy expensive San Francisco, there will be a restaurant and bar attached to the course. A stand-alone course wouldn’t cut it, he said.

The project has already reached its fundraising goal on Kickstarter but more funds mean more fun. In addition to Kickstarter, Fox has raised about $1.45 million in private money.

When it does open check out hole No. 13. MAKE is designing the hole complete with robots.

In which fabric "wall clings" win me over

LT_sample_prints.jpg
We recently had this little start-up named Larger Than Life (LTL) prints join us on Makers Market. They came on board with the sweet Mars Attacks! trading card art license from Topps, and they were making all kinds of extravagant claims about their business model: They’d print any image you want in poster sizes up to 7′. They’d cut your image to shape if you didn’t want a rectangle. They were using some kind of miracle fabric substrate covered with a low-tack adhesive that you could just smooth directly onto the wall. Kinda like a post-it note, they claimed, you could remove it and reposition it many, many times, and it wouldn’t damage the wall. I was, frankly, fairly skeptical.
They sent me a couple of samples, shown above, which I just now received and applied to my wall, and I am pleased to be able to report that the technology is apparently everything they claim. Plus the prints look great.
They sent me the four-foot size, which they recommend applying with a friend, because you have to peel it off of a wax-paper backing and get it aligned and smooth on the wall and that’s a lot easier, with a large size, if you’ve got four hands. But I was able to do it by myself with only a minimum of swearing by just peeling off the top edge of the decal, aligning it and smoothing it down on the wall, and then reaching behind the hanging print to peel off the backing from the top down, smoothing the decal to the wall as I went.
I just put them up a week ago, so I can’t report anything about how long the adhesive really lasts, or if it will really stay on the wall for months or years until I move. Or whether, when I do finally remove it, if it will really leave the wall undamaged. But this far into the product life-cycle, anyway, I am beyond impressed. The prints cling tight to the wall and, unless you look really close, appear to be painted on–like you’ve got custom murals painted right on your walls.
Thumbnail image for CC3-retouched-500px-wide.jpg
OK, so the technology appears to deliver on their claims, but what about the cost? I recently scored a golden-age comic book (“Camera Comics, #3,” published in 1944) featuring a beyond-awesome cover showing a female American combat reporter walloping a Nazi with a Kodak Medalist II. I bought it just for the cover, took a hi-res scan, retouched it, and decided I wanted to print two 17×24″ posters of it for myself and my buddy, Billy, who has a total gear-geek obsession with the Medalist II. I uploaded my art at LTLprints.com and two copies came to $60, with shipping.
Aye, methinks, there’s the rub. I can do way better than that at a copy shop. So I go over to my local no-longer-Kinko’s and have two copies printed on matte paper at 17×24″ for $40, proudly saving myself $20.

What I hadn’t counted on, of course, was the cost of mounting to the wall. I could just hang the paper on the wall with thumbtacks or tape, certainly, but I wanted a touch classier than just bare paper stuck to a wall. So I start looking for frames, and realize A) I can’t get a frame in exactly the size I want and B) even the cheapest frames of the closest acceptable size are going to cost me around $20 apiece, including shipping. And I’ll have to put a hole in the wall to hang them. So paper printouts, crappy frames, and holes in the walls for $80 together, versus the $60 LTL wanted for the whole package, including that awesome painted-on effect. Next time I want to print a custom poster I’m going with the wall cling.
